Websites have rapidly evolved from a novel medium to essential communication tool for all types and sizes of businesses. In 2008 I noticed that many small businesses and nonprofits were paying more than necessary for less than acceptable web solutions. Some providers put their own job security above customer needs by using nonstandard design elements, overpriced hosting, and incomplete documentation.
Standardized website hosting and creation solutions are readily available at fair prices. There is no need to use black box information technology personnel to have a functional and attractive site. Small business owners just need to be made aware of the options they have available to them. That is what I do. I educate, build simply, document, and train.
And OK I’ll admit it, I have ignored one customer to the point where I’m embarrassed to contact them. They hired me (with no money changing hands) about a year ago. There were mistakes made on all sides. I talk about the mistakes made by all parties in this blog post. It might be an illuminating read for newbie web pros and folks looking to hire a web designer for simple site creation.
I enjoy creating small uncomplicated business sites. I don’t want to build complex communities for a group of bosses, while I do have the skills to do this using standardized software, it really is not in the best interest of organizations to try to create a fully functioning group site on the cheap. What is the difference between a group site and a website? Read this and learn.
